VAC Ban Checker: What a VAC Ban Means in CS2 (and What It Doesn't)
VAC, game ban, economy ban — what is the difference? Learn how to read any Steam ban history and why a VAC ban is not proof of CS2 cheating.
Every CS2 cheat checker shows the red banner. Almost none explain what it actually means.
The three ban types Steam exposes
VAC ban Issued by Valve Anti-Cheat. Steam tells you the account has N VAC bans and how many days ago the last one occurred. It does not tell you the game. A VAC from Rust in 2019 and a VAC from CS2 yesterday look identical via the API.
Game ban Issued by the game developer. For CS2, this is Valve as well, but the API still doesn't give you a clean "CS2" label on older Source engine bans. More specific than VAC, but still noisy.
Economy ban / Community ban Market trading fraud or Steam Community abuse. Not cheating, but it correlates with risky account trading and shows up in the History engine.
How to check any account
Paste the SteamID64, custom URL, or full profile link into cs2scan.org or any VAC checker. We pull GetPlayerBans directly:

CS2Scan's History engine then adds account age and Steam level to de-noise it. A 2011 account with 1 VAC from 2,800 days ago is not the same risk as a 2024 account with 1 VAC from 8 days ago.
Common misconceptions
"VAC banned = CS2 cheater" False. You need date + context. This is why CS2Scan never labels an account as "cheater" — it gives you a probability and a confidence.
"No VAC = clean" Also false. VAC is delayed by weeks to months. VAC Live can ban mid-match now, but many cheats survive until a ban wave.
"Private profile means hidden VAC" No. VAC banners are visible even on private profiles via the API unless the entire profile is in full private mode and Valve's privacy settings block the call — in that case CS2Scan reports N/A and drops confidence.
What to do if you have a false VAC
If you have a VAC from 10 years ago in a different game, make your CS2 stats public and keep your friend list clean. That lowers your Opacity and Network risk and lets reviewers see legitimate play.
Use this as documentation when appealing on FACEIT or community leagues, not as proof for Valve — Valve does not overturn VACs except in confirmed false-positive waves.
